Changing to a Raw Food Diet

Changing to a raw food diet requires you to base your food consumption around fresh fruit and vegetables and many types of nuts and seeds. Typically the guidelines for this diet state that at least three quarters of the food consumed must be living or raw.
- Foods eaten whilst on this diet must be unprocessed and fresh. Organic food is also a bonus as it has not been in contact with pesticides or potentially harmful fertilisers. Liquid substances such as water should be purified before drinking to reduce chemicals added by water companies and all foods must be natural and not manmade. Meat does not readily feature in this diet but protein can be gained through foods such as green beans.
- When changing to a raw food diet ‘cooking’ techniques used can include juicing fruits in order to create juices and also blending to create soups. Nuts and dried fruit can be soaked and beans and seeds tend to be sprouted. Dehydration can also be used as a limited form of heat.
- Be aware that when changing to a raw food diet certain nutritional deficiencies can occur, mainly calcium and iron. In order to work around this, supplements can be taken or these can be found in certain sources of natural food, remember to read recommended daily amounts on foods in order to find whether the foods you are buying contain these essential minerals.
