Fad diets are so popular, there is always some celebrity eating a weird combination of food – and yes it will work, but only for a short time period. Furthermore the celebrity or the magazine are probably exagurating how easy the diet is, or are leaving out information about the intense exercise regime the celebrity has also been doing to lose the weight.

Such stories create a craze where everyone tries the new diet – people lose weight, then put it back on and a month later they are trying something else – the next fad.

You need to break this cycle and eat sensibly and within your calorie limit, while taking regular exercise – living a balanced lifestyle is the only way to lose weight and to keep it off.

You need to think about your entire lifesytle and how you can change your behavior and develop new healthy eating habits and patterns of behavior in the long run. Here are some helpful ideas to help you get started:

  • Keep a diary of your daily food intake, you will feel more responsible and you can see your problem foods and problem days even.
  • Always choose the lower fat foods – i.e. low fat cheese, and foods with reduced fat content.
  • Eat smaller portions
  • Eat vegetables and fruit as snacks instead of crisps and chocolate.
  • Eat fruit and low fat yoghurt as deserts instead of chocolate / sugar based deserts.
  • Eat breakfast – it will stop you snacking and keep your metabolism burning.
  • Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise / activity per day.
  • Be realistic – don’t aim to lose too much too soon – 1-2lbs a week is a steady figure and will soon build up.
